The UK hotel industry is now the strongest in Europe, according to new research from consultancy Deloitte.

The firm’s HotelBenchmark report shows revenue per available room in the UK has risen to £60 per night, a 10 per cent increase on the same period in 2003.

The biggest rises were in London, where occupancy levels were up 13 per cent on the same period last year. The average room rate in the capital for the first half of the year reached £105, £7 higher than last year.

Meanwhile, the revenue per available room was £86 in the first half of the year, an increase of 13 per cent compared with £76 in 2003.

Marvin Rust, hospitality managing partner at Deloitte said: “London’s resurgence in both leisure and corporate travel is set to continue.

“Our forecasts predict that hotel performance will exceed the previous highs from London 2000/01 figures by the end of 2005.”

Meanwhile, regional hotel occupancy levels also continued to grow, with revenue per available room rising above £42, a seven per cent increase on the first half of 2003.

The figures for the month of June, typically a quiet period for the industry, were even better. Revenue per available room grew by 8.3 per cent.

Rust added: “The recovery in the UK is now firmly established afer several years of adversity for the travel industry.”
