Hotel rates in holiday hot spots fall
European hotel rates have dropped by an average of 7% from £118 in September to £110 this month, according to price comparison website trivago.
Prices have fallen in 35 of the top 50 listed in its hotel price index, with some of the biggest drops occurring in popular holiday spots such as Majorcan resorts Alucdia (down 33%), Calla Millor (down 38%) and Playa del Palma (down 41%).
The price falls are in line with seasonal slumps, says trivago, but the price comparison site said they provided an opportunity for travellers to enjoy still sunny weather overseas at significantly reduced prices.
Hotel prices in the UK have fallen across the board this month, although the change has been less pronounced than in the rest of Europe.
Scotland saw the biggest slump, with hotel rates in Edinburgh and Glasgow falling 15% and 12% respectively. Hotel rates fell 5% in Newcastle , 4% in Blackpool 3% in Bristol. In London and Liverpool prices were down only 1% while in Leeds and Sheffield rates went up 1% and in Manchester and Birmingham they were up 10% and 9% respectively.
