Hotel sued by guests who contracted Legionnaires’ disease
Two guests are suing a hotel in New Hampshire where they claimed they contracted Legionnaires’ disease during a recent outbreak which left one person dead.
Louise Pare and Celeste Billington stayed at the Sands Resort near Hampton Beach in early August and contracted Legionnaires, the lawsuit claims.
Inspectors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed bacteria were found in in three guest rooms as well as in a hot tub and water heater.
The lawsuit says both had symptoms of Legionnaires and were then diagnosed with the illness.
Pare was admitted to hospital shortly after their stay.
"The Sands Resort at Hampton Beach was investigated by government health departments and has been determined to be the source of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease before during and after the plaintiff’s stay at the hotel," the lawsuit said.
The women believe they contracted it from the spa area.
In addition to the hotel, Aqua Paradise Pools & Spas is named as a defendant in the case.
After the outbreak was discovered, New Hampshire’s health department ordered the resort to ‘take immediate steps to remediate the Legionella bacteria and notify guests.’
In addition to one death, 14 people were infected.
