Hurricane Jeanne kills at least 100 people
At least 100 people are known to have been killed by Hurricane Jeanne, the latest devastating storm to affect the Caribbean region.
Some 90 people are reported to have been killed by the hurricane in Haiti, while at least 11 have died in the Dominican Republic, which shares he island of Hispanola with Haiti.
According to ITV.com, many of the deaths were caused by days of intense rain, which led to sever flooding and mudslides.
The city of Gonaives, with a population of around 200,000, is said to be largely covered with mud, while the island of La Tortue, on Haiti’s north shore, is reported to be “barely visible” under deep water.
The storm, however, no longer appears to be a threat to the Caribbean region, having changed direction and turned into the Atlantic.
However, the remnants of Hurricane Ivan are still being felt in some north-eastern parts of the United States, with heavy, prolonged rain and a threat of flooding in some areas. Thirty-three people are known to have been killed by Hurricane Ivan in the United States.
