India Ministry of Tourism has launched a revamped version of the Incredible India Digital Platform (IIDP). It provides a comprehensive resource for travelers and industry stakeholders to explore the country’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse attractions.
The upgraded platform features virtual experiences across multiple categories. Sections are dedicated to culture, heritage, adventure, gastronomy, wellness, art and craft, and rural tourism. It also includes an AI-powered tool that personalizes visitor experiences. AI offers real-time weather updates, city exploration features, and essential travel services.
Since its relaunch, the platform has attracted about 2.6 million visitors as of July 2025. The revamp should further help strengthening India’s appeal.
In 2024, India recorded 2,947.6 million domestic tourist visits, a 17.36% increase compared to 2023. The country welcomed also approximately 9.95 million international tourists. This represented a modest increase of 4.6% over the 9.52 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023.
The United States, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada ranked among India’s top international source markets last year. It reflects strong demand from both long-haul and regional travelers.
The Ministry continues to emphasize sustainable tourism through various programs. This includes among other the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD), and the Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD). These efforts aim to build capacity among local communities, women, and youth while encouraging entrepreneurship.
Turning Indians into ambassadors of their own country
Under the Capacity Building for Service Providers scheme, the government also works to improve skills and employment opportunities in the tourism sector.
A special focus targets local communities, women, and tribal groups. As part of this, the Ministry has rolled out the Paryatan Mitra and Paryatan Didi (‘ambassadors’) initiatives to empower locals—especially women—in tourism-related roles.
The initiative has first been piloted in 6 tourist destinations across India. They are Orchha (Madhya Pradesh), Gandikota (Andhra Pradesh), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Aizawl (Mizoram), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and Sri Vijaya Puram (Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
Through this initiative, the Ministry of Tourism aims to elevate the overall experience for tourists in destinations. Foreign travelers can meet ‘tourist-friendly’ people who are considered like India ‘ambassadors & storytellers’ for their destination. Training is provided for individuals interest to interact and engage with tourists in a destination.
