India tops Christmas getaways for lastminute

India has overtaken the US as the most popular Christmas getaway with lastminute.com.

The online agency said the US has slipped to second after topping the list last year with India moving from third to the top slot.

Kenya moved up from fifth to third with the Dominican Republic in fourth, down from second most popular in 2004.

Jamaica, Barbados and hurricane Wilma-battered Mexico dropped out of the top ten with Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and Mauritius taking their place.

Lastminute holidays and flights director John Bevan said Goa continues to be the mainstay of the India programme.

“Trips to India have outsold holidays in the states this Christmas which we believe is indicative of the country’s booming tourism industry,” he said. “It’s no longer just the preserve of backpackers. India is now a mainstream holiday choice for couples, groups and families.”

Despite slipping to second spot, Bevan said US cities of New York and Las Vegas continue to be popular.
