Indonesia hit by powerful earthquake
Indonesia was hit by a powerful earthquake yesterday, causing a tsunami warning to be issued but later cancelled.
The US Geological Survey said the 7.9 magnitude quake struck at 12.49 GMT (19.49 local time) on Wednesday off the west coast of the country, about 500 miles southwest of the city of Padang. It was about 15 miles deep.
There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Indonesian officials intitially issused a tsunami warning for West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh but this was later dropped.
