International visitors staying longer
International visitors to NSW are staying longer and spending more in the State, according to research released today by Tourism Research Australia.
Ms Nori said that the International Visitor Survey for the year ended June 2006 showed that the length of stay of international visitors increased by 8.9%.
“This means that the visitors coming to Australia and NSW are spending more time here – and we want to see that continue,” she said.
“International visitors are the most lucrative for Australia so it is a boost to the tourism economy when they stay longer,” Ms Nori said.
Ms Nori said NSW maintained its position as the premier destination for international visitors with a market share of 54.4 percent.
“There’s no doubt Sydney means Australian in international markets and our strong positioning under the brand – There’s no place in the world like Sydney – reinforces this fact,” Ms Nori said.
Ms Nori said that despite the tough operating environment the NSW tourism industry was maintaining its position as Australia’s top state to visit.
“Whilst there is a global downturn in domestic tourism, it is even more important that we become more aggressive in promoting our destinations to the international traveller,” said Ms Nori.
“In a year where our Kiwi neighbours are actively poaching our holiday makers, more needs to be done by the Federal Government to maintain the international market,” she said.
“It is disappointing that Tourism Australia, whose core responsibility is to attract international visitors was handed a 3 per cent cut to its budget base by the Howard Government,” said Ms Nori.
