Investigation into data breach at Hilton hotels
A possible data breach is under investigation at Hilton after ‘a large number of franchise properties’ in the US were reportedly compromised at point of sale terminals in retail outlets and restaurants.
A large data breach of customer credit card information was discovered in August and subsequently tied to credit card activity at Hilton hotels, according to the Krebs on Security website.
Five different banks have now ascertained the source of the breach was Hilton hotels nationwide, likely caused by a PoS malware attack.
“Hilton Worldwide is strongly committed to protecting our customers’ credit card information,” a Hilton Worldwide statement said.
“We have many systems in place and work with some of the top experts in the field to address data security. Unfortunately the possibility of fraudulent credit card activity is all too common for every company in today’s marketplace. We take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”
The exact number of properties compromised is unclear but the data breach could date back to November 2014, Krebs said, citing unnamed sources.
