Investigation opened after Epic Universe roller coaster death
An investigation is ongoing at Universal’s new theme park, Epic Universe following the death of a man after riding a roller coaster.
Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, was found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers and was later pronounced deceased.
The cause of death was ‘multiple blunt impact injuries’ according to the Orange County medical examiner.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, responsible for them park safety incidents, confirmed an investigation is being conducted.
“Universal has been extremely cooperative and has complied with all required notifications. This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it is available,” it said.
Stardust Racers is a dual-launch roller coaster that can reach speeds of up to 62 mph.
An incident report revealed that Zavala had a ‘preexisting spinal injury’ although it didn’t say whether it contributed to his death.
He was a wheelchair user due to the injury.
“We are devastated by this tragic event and extend our sincerest sympathies to the guest’s loved ones,” a Universal Orlando Resorts spokesperson said.
