Istanbul hit by two separate attacks
Istanbul has been targeted in two separate attacks today with open fire on the US consulate and a bomb explosion at a police station.
It is not yet known if the two incidents are connected, reports the BBC.
The US consulate attackers fled when police shot back, but one of the two assailants, believed to be a woman, has now been arrested.
The consulate said in a tweet that it was closed until further notice.
At least 10 people were reported to have been injured in the police station bomb blast in the Istanbul neighbourhood of Sultanbeyli, including three police officers.
The attacks come at a time of increased tension between Turkey and rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The country also recently announced it was taking a more active role against Islamic State militants.
