It’s time to join the Fightback Forum
TravelMole is back better than ever in 2009 with a number of new features to broaden the appeal of the industry’s most respected online travel newswire.
Along with industry news and expert opinion, we’ll have a few characters dropping in for time to time, starting today with Mister Jam, the humorous writer, Nury Vittachi.
There are now clear pointers to the after shocks of last year’s economic turmoil on the travel and tourism industry.
Australia has indicated that its international visitor numbers will fall by four percent in 2009.
Singapore suffered a nine percent fall in visitor numbers in November.
Thailand must recover from the double whammy of the economic slowdown and recent political upheaval which is rumbling on into the new year.
India suffers under the cloud of the Mumbai attacks and the tense relations with neighbour Pakistan.
Vietnam and Laos have each seen visitor numbers fall away and the outlook for 2009 looks much less certain than it was 12 months ago.
IATA figures for November show a 4.6 percent drop in international passenger traffic following the 1.3 percent demand contraction in October and the 2.9 percent fall in September.
Asia-Pacific carriers face the most difficult operating environment with a 9.7 percent decline in November, following a 6.1 percent contraction in October. The region also had the most aggressive capacity cuts at minus 5.1 percent.
Tough times call for clear vision and leadership, plus strategies that will help to limit the damage as the financial tsunami continues to threaten the tourism industry.
