Italian rail on the right track
A boom in Italian rail traffic is expected to flow on to a 10% growth in the Australian market during 2014, according to International Rail managing director Jonathan Hume.
Hume said that sales revenue for Trenitalia from international markets during 2013 was up 96% on the previous year.
He added: "On-going surveys indicated that travellers experienced a 97.1% satisfaction rate across the entire service – from punctuality, to on-board catering and general comfort.
"The growth in sales can be attributed mainly to the excellent value of year-round advance purchase rail fares."
Hume said that Australian agents and their clients appreciated being able to book train services up to 120 days in advance – a practice that also meant cheaper fares the further ahead you book.
He said that other factors influencing travellers were the three levels of pricing on Trenitalia services, ease of booking and the electronic tickets that allow boarding passengers to have their vouchers scanned by the conductor.
