ITT plans conference for lecturers

The Institute of Travel & Tourism and City & Guilds are joining forces to run a conference for travel and tourism lecturers.

The event, to be held in Birmingham on January 12, is aimed at creating better links between the travel industry and the education sector.

Topics likely to be debated include work placements, matching course content to the travel and tourism industry, the impact of terrorism and scholarships from the travel trade.

ITT education and training committee chairman Claire Steiner said: “We have thought for some time that we need to do more to build, cement and maintain links between the education sector and the industry and we intend this to be an annual event.

“Although we haven’t tied down the running order for the conference, there will be lots to discuss. Initial indications are that up to 100 delegates might attend.”

Southport College tourism lecturer Gillian Banks said: “There are many regional developments with which colleges could become involved but currently there is no appropriate forum to create links. There would be big benefits if there was a greater awarenes of everyone’s need within a still fragmented industry.”
