JAL plans Europe-bound low-cost carrier

Japan Airlines has unveiled the name and first routes of its new no-frills budget airline.

Zipair Tokyo will officially launch next year from Tokyo’s Narita Airport to Bangkok and Seoul, JAL announced.

No other routes have been announced yet but long haul flights are on the radar, and it will ‘first consider North America, and later Europe’, according to Zipair president Shingo Nishida.

Zipair could start long-haul flights as early as 2021, he said.

"We have many rivals but as a Japanese carrier we aim to provide a reliable high-quality service at reasonable prices," Nishida added.

It will begin operating with two Boeing 787 midsize jets and plans to increase to a fleet of 10 within five years.
