Japan Airlines jet engulfed in flames after runway collision
At least five people are dead after a dramatic runway collision at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
A small coastguard plane collided with a larger Japan Airlines commercial jet at the airport.
Authorities said five of the six crew on the coastguard plane died.
All 379 passengers and cabin crew aboard the JAL flight were evacuated.
Four were transported to hospital for treatment but are not thought to be serious.
Video footage showed large flames around the JAL plane.
The flight had just touched down from Sapporo.
“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage,” JAL said.
The coastguard plane was heading to Western Japan to assist with rescue efforts after a large earthquake yesterday.
Tokyo Haneda Airport shut down all runways and suspended all flights.
Tadayuki Tsutsumi, JAL’s SVP of corporate safety and security, said an investigation is underway.
