Jetstar to grow on the Gold Coast
Jetstar is looking to ride the wave of all time high visitor numbers to the Gold Coast with plans to grow the carrier’s presence over the next 12 months.
The Gold Coast Airport has announced that visitors in January 2007 hit a record high of 352,554, with sustainable growth of services and capacity on Jetstar’s agenda since day one, with capacity increasing by 20% since May 2004 and new direct services to Adelaide, Newcastle and Christchurch, New Zealand coming on board to join original launch services to Sydney and Melbourne.
According to Group General Manager of Commercial, Bruce Buchanan, Jetstar is keen to capitalise on the current record high levels of seat factors with new services, adding, “We are actively looking for more aircraft to service our growth plans with the Gold Coast high on our agenda”.
“Jetstar has enjoyed a close relationship with Gold Coast Airport since day one and this is one wave we want to ride together.”
“Within the next 12 months we will be looking to expand our domestic offerings and provide more intra-Australia travel opportunities for additional tourists brought to our shores from our new international long haul network,” Mr Buchanan said.
To date, Jetstar has carried 3.5 million passengers through the Gold Coast and of the existing routes into the Gold Coast, there is strong and sustained demand to increase capacity from both Sydney and the metropolitan Melbourne area.
Jetstar now operates 51 weekly return services between Sydney and the Gold Coast, 40 return weekly services to Melbourne, daily direct to Adelaide, three times weekly services to Newcastle and a twice weekly service to Christchurch in New Zealand.
According to Mr Buchanan, low fares will remain critical to Jetstar’s expanding services, adding, “Low fares have driven these latest record traffic figures and it will be low fares that grow them in the future.
“With fares that reached as low as $22 from Sydney to the Gold Coast this month, all inclusive of surcharges, fees and taxes, our commitment to low fares has not and will not waiver,” he said.
The carrier is also increasing its presence and investment in its sponsorship of the Gold Coast Titans, with the three year deal seeing Jetstar becoming naming rights sponsors with the team travelling with Jetstar to interstate matches.
Mr Buchanan said, “Our sponsorship of the Titans is an important one as we grow our presence and our commitment to the local community and we will be announcing shortly some exciting joint initiatives for passengers and football fans alike designed to generate further traffic through the Gold Coast as the Titans build their travelling fan base”.
