Jumbo “200 metres” from hitting skyscraper
A jumbo jet came within just 200 metres of crashing into a famous Tokyo skyscraper in the centre of the city after veering off course. According to the Independent Online news service, the Orient Thai charter jet nearly hit the 333-metre Toyko Tower – a copy of France’s Eiffel Tower – when it veered off course during its final approach to the city’s Haneda airport. The incident reportedly took place shortly after midnight on 18 September. There were no passengers on board, the website reports; the aircraft was flying to Haneda to pick up passengers to fly them to the Thai resort of Phuket. Orient Thai is quoted as saying that the captain of the jet is to be suspended following the incident. A Japanese transport official is quoted as saying: “The plane appears to have some near Tokyo Tower but we don’t know exactly how low it was flying at that point. This has never happened before and we would like to know the reason.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad Ltd
