La Guardia closes after plane skids off runway

Friday, 06 Mar, 2015 0

New York’s La Guardia Airport was closed yesterday (Thursday) after an emergency landing in snowy conditions.

The Delta aircraft, which was arriving at La Guardia from Atlanta in bad weather, veered to the left shortly after touching the runway, smashing into a fence just inches from the water at nearby Flushing Bay.

The impact caused a minor fuel leak on the plane’s left wing, but fire crews reacted quickly and were able to stop it.

According to authorities, two dozen people reported minor injuries, three taken to hospital.

Both runways were shut at 11am EST. One was re-opened at around 2pm, but there were still delays and some cancellations.

The bad weather has also caused delays and cancellations at other New York airports.

Passengers were advised to check the status of their flights.
