LAX offers first remote baggage check-in

Officials of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) are hoping a new program where passengers drop off their luggage and get their boarding passes at sites throughout the city will help spur a convenience revolution.

The service is the first in the US to combine remote baggage check-in with an airport shuttle service.

“Officials hope that the program will revolutionize how passengers use Los Angeles International Airport and will eliminate an inconvenience for travelers and decrease the security risk presented by long lines at ticket counters and at sky cab stands,” wrote the Los Angeles Times.

Passengers can check up to two bags at a counter near the terminal entrance for a $5-per-person fee. Travelers then board a bus for LAX, where they go straight to the security checkpoint.

“It’s not hard to imagine that in a few short years, this will be the smart way to travel in LA,” said Lydia Kennard, executive director of the city’s airport agency.

The service will also be launched this month at the convention center, Union Station FlyAway and the Los Angeles port.

Officials hope to install remote baggage check-in at airport parking lots, hotels and rental car agencies.

Airlines that fly 60% of the domestic travelers at LAX are participating in the program.
