LAX police mislay stick of dynamite after security exercise
Police at Los Angeles airport conducting a security training exercise mislaid a live stick of dynamite which was not discovered for another four days, a law enforcement official said.
The live stick of TNT was used to help train sniffer dogs at the airport and was accidently left underneath an old plane on the tarmac outside an airport museum.
The stick was signed out from a TSA explosive storage facility at the airport to be used for training – something which happens virtually on a daily basis, the official, who declined to be identified, told the Associated Press.
It was discovered by workers underneath the ‘Spirit of Seventy Six,’ a decommissioned plane parked outside the Flight Path Learning Center and Museum at the airport’s southern perimeter.
The plane is run by a volunteer group and regularly hosts school groups and other visitors.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Belinda Joseph said the item was used for training and said "there was a certain amount of TNT contained in it."
Though classified as live, it would have needed a separate detonator to set it off.
Sgt. Joseph said airport police are investigating the incident which took place in late April.
