Live ammo found beneath Seattle cruise port

Sunday, 15 Nov, 2010 0

Port of Seattle police divers have called in explosive experts after discovering ammunition beneath the city’s busy cruise ship terminal.

This is the second time since September that divers have discovered ammunition.

The US navy used Pier 91 area as a supply depot during WW2 and up to the early 1970s, according to Seattle website King5.com which broke the news.

Thousands of cruise passengers pass through the pier each year.

The site says that most finds unearthed a few months ago were harmless, including empty shells and training rounds, but there were also projectiles containing highly explosive materials.

This time, while inspecting pier pilings, another projectile was discovered and army experts were called in. It is believed to be live but lots of corrosion means it is difficult to tell how dangerous it is.

The US army, navy, coast guard and Port of Seattle police are now working on what to do next.
