LOT Polish Airlines latest carrier to take-off with Bitcoin
Travellers heading to Warsaw or Krakow will now be able to fund their travels with digital currency Bitcoin.
Star Alliance member LOT Polish Airlines is the latest carrier to adopt Bitcoin payment for flights which will be handled through third party Polish payment platform PSP.
Ticket prices will be calculated in appropriate currencies such as dollars, euros or Polish zloty and then converted into Bitcoin through PSP.
Transactions can be completed through LOT’s desktop or mobile platforms.
"We noticed this potential, which is why we are one of the first airlines in the world to give passengers the possibility of paying with bitcoins," said Jiri Marek, LOT executive director for sales and distribution.
Despite this, the airline industry has been fairly slow to embrace the Bitcoin economy.
Just over a year ago Latvian carrier airBaltic became the world’s first airline enabling Bitcoin transactions followed by Mexican carrier TAR Airlines in June.
Earlier this year airline payment network UATP, which is jointly owned by several global airlines, partnered with Bitcoin processor Bitnet to offer a Bitcoin payment option for more than 200 of the world’s airlines.
