Macau ready to cap casino operations
MACAU – Macau’s casino operators are being told to slow down.
Francis Tam, Macau secretary for finance and economy, has told the casinos that the number of gaming tables in Macau will be capped at its current number of “around 4,000â€.
He also warned that if the six concessionaires could not agree among themselves to cap commissions paid to junket operators at 1.25 percent, the government would have no choice but to step in and regulate the market accordingly.
The freeze is not an indefinite one, Tam added, saying that a major assessment was under way on the state of the city’s gaming industry, and all the operators’ views would be taken into account before a final decision is made.
Destination Macau said the implications of this decision for the Cotai Strip developments were enormous: “Tables will quite literally have to be moved from existing properties on the Macau peninsula out to the new properties being built on Cotai if they are to open with gaming facilities to match the half-dozen massive new hotels slated for opening next year.â€
