Macau rolls out discounts to attract more mainland visitors

Monday, 31 Aug, 2020 0

The Macau government is funding a spending-stimulus programme to lure mainland Chinese visitors.

Beijing has eased outbound restrictions allowing travel into Macau on a phased basis.

Macau is tapping Chinese mega brands Tencent and Alibaba, along with airline Air Macau to attract more travellers and get them to spend more.

It will include discounted offers on flights and hotel stays to incentivise them to stay longer.

It will also feature shopping promotions.

Special offers are up for grabs by following Macau Tourism’s official account on Tencent’s WeChat app, or through Alibaba’s travel platform, Fliggy.

"The campaign will provide visitors from the mainland with promotional offers covering categories including flight tickets, accommodation, and spending at local shops," according to a release from the Government Information Bureau.

"The aim is to encourage people to stay longer in Macau, and to stimulate their spending while in the city."

Mainlanders from Guangdong province can enter Macau at the moment and travellers from other parts of China will be allowed later this month.

"In view of an anticipated increase in visitor volume following resumption of the facilitated individual travel scheme, members of the Macau public are advised to observe closely the city’s disease-control measures," the Government Information Bureau added.

Macau inbound tourism volume fell a massive 99.5% in the second quarter of 2020.
