‘Majority’ want to see Gatwick Express retained
The vast majority of people want to see the Gatwick Express non-stop rail link retained.
Eight out of ten respondents to an online poll conducted by Gatwick airport said they wanted to see the service saved.
The Gatwick Express is threatened following Department for Transport consultation on reducing peak time overcrowding on trains between London and Brighton.
But more than 40 MPs from across all political parties have supported a Parliamentary motion calling for the service to be maintained.
Gatwick owner BAA argues that any attempt to remove or downgrade the Gatwick express would be a “significant retrograde step”.
“Without the Gatwick Express at the heart of the airport’s integrated transport hub, it will be more difficult for the airport to retain its competitive position as a leading international gateway serving London,” a company statement said.
British Airways, Continental Airlines, easyJet and Virgin Atlantic have supported the BAA campaign.
