Malaysia attracts with “My Second Home” programme
KUALA LUMPUR – Foreigners seem to be making a beeline for Malaysia to make it their second home, judging from the over 700 applications approved for the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Programme for the first six months of the year.
Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said the four countries with the most applications are Britain, Japan, Bangladesh and South Korea.
“The British like coming here during winter,” he added.
The preferred destinations are Penang and eco-tourism areas.
“Due to the vast promotions being carried out, many have gotten to know the country better, especially as this year is Visit Malaysia Year,” said Lim
The Tourism Ministry is targeting about 2,500 applications for this year.
Since the programme started in 1996, when it was known as the Silver Hair programme, about 10,500 applications have been approved. A total of 8,723 applications have been approved under the MM2H programme, which was launched in 2002.
