An investigation is being carried out over a boat collision which left two tourists dead in the Maldives last week.

A speedboat and a diving boat collided off the island of Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll, killing a Malaysian teenager and a 42-year-old Chinese woman, news publication Haveeru reported.

Both the victims were among six on the dive boat, police said.

There were four people travelling in the speed boat, which shuttles tourists between Maafushi and the Maldives capital Male.

"Both the vessels are heavily damaged. Police, armed forces and the public are coordinating the efforts to salvage the two vessels and bring them to Maafushi," a police spokesperson said.
