Heathrow Airport has confirmed one of two airport workers injured in a crash on the airfield this morning has died.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that following a serious accident involving two vehicles on our airfield, an airport colleague has passed away. Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident. We will be fully cooperating with the police in the investigation which will follow."

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was taken to hospital following the crash, which led to around 20 flights being delayed from Terminal 5.

The airport hasn’t yet released further details of the accident, but a spokesman said it didn’t involve any aircraft. One other member of staff was treated at the site.

Emergency services remain at the site of the incident, which took place early this morning near Terminal 5.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the Serious Collision Investigation Unit Health and the Safety Executive has been called in to investigate the incident.

He said: "Police were called at 6.06am following a collision between two airport vehicles on the taxiway at Heathrow airport.

"One male was treated for non-life threatening or life-changing injuries. Another male, aged in his 40s, has been taken to a west London hospital.

"There have been no arrests. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have been informed and are in attendance."

British Airways said: "A number of stands at Terminal 5 are currently inaccessible and this is causing some delays. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."
