Man gets 77 years for rhino deaths
A man has been sentenced to 77 years in prison after being convicted of rhino poaching in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
It was alleged the poacher killed three rhino calves.
According to Southern African Tourism Update, the Kruger Park has lost 370 rhino to poaching since January this year.
The topic of legalising the trade in rhino horn will be debated at a South African tourism conference taking place in Stellenbosch in August.
The debate will include panelists Colin Bell, conservationist and founder of Wilderness Safaris; and Pelham Jones, chairperson of the Private Rhino Owners’ Association.
South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs said recently that rhino poaching has continued to increase, with 1,004 rhino poached last year. This compares to 333 in 2010, 448 in 2011 and 668 in 2012.
