A Maryland man was rescued from the ocean off Florida after he jumped from a cruise ship while apparently drunk, officials said.

The Carnival Liberty alerted the Coast Guard that Scott Durrin, 29, of Rockville, Md., had possibly jumped overboard, authorities said.

Mr Durrin and three friends had been drinking when he decided to get into one of the ship’s lifeboats, FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela told the AP.

“He took the ax and was struggling to cut the ropes,” she said.

When a security officer tried to get him out of the raft, Mr Durrin jumped into the water, she said.

Mr Durrin fell about 36 feet into the water about 50 miles off the coast of Boca Raton. Crew aboard the Liberty threw life-rings and jackets over the side. Coast Guard crews located Mr Durrin about an hour later.

He was being examined at a Miami hospital, according to a statement from the Miami-based cruise line. No additional details about his condition or whether he would be charged were available.

The Liberty departed from Fort Lauderdale on a six-day cruise.
