Many children among plane crash dead

Up to 50 children are among the 70 people feared dead following a mid-air collision between a Russian passenger aircraft and a cargo plane in Southern Germany last night.

The Bashkir Airlines Tupolev 154 and a DHL Worldwide Express Boeing 757 collided in a huge fireball at around 11.30pm local time, leaving no chance of survival.

Although the incident occurred just inside German airspace, the two planes were still being guided by Swiss air traffic control. According to Swiss television reports the Russian pilot had ignored two warnings to lower his altitude.

Both pilots on board the DHL freight plane were also killed in the crash. The exact number of children on board the flight – who were on a trip from Moscow to Barcelona – has still to be confirmed, along with the total number of dead.
