Marriott plans to accelerate expansion of Starwood brands

Friday, 07 Mar, 2017 0
Marriott International plans to start ramping up expansion of its acquired Starwood brands and hinted it may also add to its 30 brand portfolio.

CEO Arne Sorensen said it wants to maintain the same rate of expansion as before the takeover, which would mean a faster growth trajectory for Starwood brands.

"We think with Aloft we can really ramp it up and grow them at a faster pace than Starwood," Sorenson said.

Under Starwood, it took about 10 years for the Aloft brand to reach 100 hotels globally.

"We don’t think we’ve grown to the point where we’re complete, we think we have a lot of growth ahead of us," he said, adding that the company only has about 15% market share in the US.

A Marriott group hotel would open on average every 15 hours during 2017.

However Sorensen said expansion could be impacted by geopolitical issues.

"We are concerned about whether national policies around travel roll out in a way that is harmful to our business and economies."
