MAS seeks MH370 compensation news blackout

Malaysian Airlines has written to newspaper editors asking for their cooperation in withdrawing all published articles that have mentioned the amount of compensation for the families of passengers affected by the disappearance of flight MH370.

MAS said revealing compensation amounts presented security threats to the families of those believed to be lost in the MH370 mystery disappearance.

Najmuddin Abdullah, MAS senior vice president, strategic communications, said: "As you all know, we have over 1000 family members under our care and our utmost priority is to assist the family members the best we can.

"We understand the need for information, especially on compensation to family members, however for security purposes the amount will not be made public.

"Hence, it is important for the media to respect their safety and privacy during these times."

MAS said in the statement that the amount of compensation would be made known only to the family members, "and will be done personally by our caregivers".

Malaysia Airlines said it has not disclosed any information pertaining to the amount of compensation as picked up by the media, "and we believe this was acquired from other sources".
