Matta: KL entertainment curfew will hurt tourism
A proposal to reduce late night hours of operation for entertainment establishments in Kuala Lumpur could seriously dampen tourism demand, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents has warned.
It would give out a message that KL is less tourist-friendly, Matta president Tan Kok Liang told news outlet Free Malaysia Today.
"Closing entertainment outlets at 1am sharp may create a ripple effect on our tourism industry and affect our country’s economy," he said.
It comes after Federal Territories minister Khalid Samad said the city would review the operating hours of several outlets.
These outlets had special dispensation to stay open until 5am to cater to tourists, but many are abusing this by allowing entry to locals.
Matta said the KL nightlife scene ‘left much to be desired,’ and tightening rules further could put off tourists from visiting.
Minister Khalid said the review should serve as a reminder to city residents to spend more time and with their families.
However, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs chief executive Ali Salman said its not the government’s place to dictate the lifestyle of the people.
"It is not the job of the government to do moral policing or force specific behaviour," he said.
