Meetings trump football in San Diego
Meetings have trumped football in San Diego.
In effect voting in favor of convention business over an expanded stadium for the Chargers, California Coastal Commission voted unanimously last week to approve an expansion of the San Diego waterfront convention center.
The issue had pitted the needs of Comic-Con, which was threatening to leave San Diego for a larger venue, against the Chargers, who had offered an alternative plan for a joint stadium-convention center to replace Qualcomm Stadium.
The $520-million expansion will provide an additional 740,000 square feet of convention space in hopes of attracting large conventions, particularly from the medical profession, the Commission said.
Comic-Con has been held in San Diego since it began in 1970, and has a contract to use the center through 2016, but it is outgrowing the space.
Supporters of the expansion plan vowed to also help the Chargers develop a stadium project.
