Mexico welcomed a record 35 million visitors in 2016

Mexico scored another banner year for tourism with a record-high 35 international million visitors in 2016.

That represents 9% annual growth, Mexico Tourism Board data shows.

Tourism spending grew by more than 10% it said.

"Mexico’s sustained, fast growth is a testament to the incredible quality and diversity in our tourism offering and the hard work for the entire industry, both internationally and domestically. More than 9 million Mexicans working in the tourism and hospitality industry have made it their mission to ensure visitors have incredible experiences," said Lourdes Berho, Mexico Tourism Board CEO.

"Plans are already underway to ensure 2017 builds upon these achievements and that Mexico continues to welcome all visitors and give them reasons to come back again and again."

Supporting the rise in arrivals is an even faster growth rate in air capacity.

The number of available seats increased by 10.7% fuelled in part by new and expanded routes from the US thanks to the enhanced US-Mexico air service agreement.

Air connectivity globally also continues to grow at a record rate.

The Mexico Tourism Board said an extra one million seats were added to the market for 2017 for international flights more than 20 countries.

This includes 25 international routes which have been expanded with additional frequencies.

The Tourism Board recently announced its marketing strategy for the year ahead with targeted campaigns focused on niche segments including destination weddings, diving, culture, gastronomy, sports and adventure.
