MGM Resorts wants to settle Mandalay Bay shooting lawsuits

MGM Resorts International plans to start talks with victims of last year’s Las Vegas Mandalay Bay shooting to reach an out of court settlement.

MGM and lawyers for the plaintiffs asked a Las Vegas judge to put proceedings on hold while the parties enter mediation with the aim of reaching a settlement.

They will seek to pause all pending litigation filed around the country covering more than 1,000 victims which claimed MGM was responsible for the death, injury and trauma caused by America’s worst mass shooting .

The numerous lawsuits say MGM negligently failed to stop shooter Stephen Paddock bringing a huge arsenal of weapons to his suite at the Mandalay Bay resort.

Paddock opened fire and killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more.

"Years of protracted litigation is in no one’s best interest. We look forward to continuing discussions and hope for a positive resolution," said MGM spokesperson Debra DeShong.

MGM had filed contentious lawsuits against victims in order to avoid liability and consolidate all the various lawsuits into a single case heard in federal court.

Las Vegas attorney Robert Eglet said: "I am encouraged at this point, although I hadn’t been since they started the shenanigans where they sued the victims."

"However, I believe that they seem to have come full circle and realized that they have got to step up and take some responsibility here."
