Minister vows: No extra passenger tax
Australia’s Labor Party has pledged that it would not increase the Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) if re-elected this weekend.
Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) managing director Matt Hingerty welcomed the ministerial statement which affirmed that the Labor Party did not have a policy to raise the PMC to help fund changes to Australia’s quarantine and biosecurity arrangements.
Hingerty said that the tourism industry was still struggling to emerge from the effects of the Global Financial Crisis and could ill-afford to pay additional charges levied under this scheme.
Hingerty said that the tourism industry would continue to oppose any attempt to lift the PMC regardless of which party won the Federal election.
