More investments in South Australia

A new tourism player is set to make its mark in South Australia, with the announcement that the Aurora Group will take ownership of the historic Ozone Seafront Hotel on Kangaroo Island from September.

It is the Group’s first expansion outside of the Northern Territory, where it operates hotels in the World-heritage listed Kakadu National Park, Darwin and Alice Springs.

South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) Chief Executive Andrew McEvoy said at ATE 2008 the announcement was extremely positive for Kangaroo Island and South Australia.

“This just shows that major tourism operators are willing to invest in South Australia and see our industry as one that is well-positioned to kick some big goals going forward,” he said.

“Aurora Hotels-Resorts-Attractions have an excellent track record in the Northern Territory for operating high quality experiences and accommodation and we welcome their investment and commitment to South Australia.”

“It is also timely to pay tribute to the team at the Ozone Seafront Hotel who have overseen its expansion over the past few years to ensure it is one of Kangaroo Island’s premier accommodation venues.”

“Chris and Debbie Schuman have managed the Hotel for many years and have done a fantastic job.”

“In addition, the Ozone has been owned for the past 20 years by Peter Turner, Bow Jude and the Lokan family who have been committed to raising the bar for the tourism industry.”

Chris Schumann said it would be an emotional time when the final hand-over occurs, adding, “The hotel has been a big part of many people’s lives but we are extremely pleased it will be operated by a company that has a wealth of experience in the tourism industry.”

Aurora Hotels-Resorts-Attractions Executive Chairman Ian Drummond said the Group was very excited to have acquired the Ozone Seafront Hotel.

“We have a great deal of admiration for what the owners have achieved with the property and the contribution it continues to make to the community and tourism industry on Kangaroo Island,” he said.

As well as the properties it manages in Kakadu National Park, Darwin and Alice Springs, Aurora Hotels-Resorts-Attractions has also created two Aboriginal experience attractions in Alice Springs – the renowned Red Centre Dreaming Dinner and Show and Aboriginal Sacred Sites & Culture Tour.

Aurora recognised the importance of Kangaroo Island as a major tourism drawcard and will work closely with the SATC to further develop tourism opportunities for the region.
