New England – A masterpiece

In Connecticut, you can actually plan an entire itinerary around the Connecticut Art Trail, which is a partnership linking 14 of the state’s world-class historic sites and museums. Following the trail, you can enjoy a tour of the state, traveling through charming villages, idyllic countryside and the picturesque South Coast.

Museums on the itinerary include the Florence Griswold Museum in New London, the home of American impressionism, and the Yale Center for British Art on the university campus in downtown New Haven.

Providence, R.I., has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, and this has contributed to its already strong reputation as a city of art. Several pieces of modern sculpture dot the open spaces of the compact downtown area. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD – pronounced riz-dee) has been a strong magnet, bringing art and artists to the city for over a century. The RISD Museum houses a world-renowned collection of more than 80,000 pieces ranging from ancient Greek and Roman statues to twentieth-century masterpieces.

The Asian collection, including a separate gallery housing a nine-foot Buddha from a medieval Japanese temple, is outstanding and the collection of American decorative arts and fine furniture is one of the finest in the country.

The current arts scene in Providence is just as vibrant as its museums, and this is highlighted at Gallery Night Providence, the third Thursday of each month. Visitors can hop aboard the art bus, where informative guides tell you about the 19 galleries and museums that are open, and maybe even give their opinion on some of the pieces on display!

It’s not surprising that Massachusetts is an art-filled state. After all, it is home to a cluster of some of the country’s finest universities, and generous benefactors and alumni have endowed them with great works of art. A little more surprising is the fact that one of the largest public art projects has just opened at Logan Airport in Boston.

Upon arrival at Logan, your group will get an immediate feel for New England, since the piece includes walls of colored glass (up to eight stories high) and the sounds of the region – crickets chirping, frogs croaking and the eerie sound of a foghorn blowing. What a relaxing introduction to the city!
