New free software for small hotels B&Bs lodges
Globa.li aims to give small, sustainable hotels and operators a fair shot at competing with big corporates for online travel bookings.
Do small players lose out in the online market? Take a small hotel offering reasonable prices and hospitality, if they wish to market their accommodation through one of the GDS they will pay up to 18% – sometimes much more when you take into account special offers and plus the fact that the OTA handles the client and therefore has first call on the ongoing relationship. In effect the OTA handles the hotel inventory as if it were its own.
Great for chain hotels with commodity rooms – they can ‘Manage their inventory’ – but smaller, owner-run establishments are faced with two BIG problems – they can’t get a sustainable rate for their accommodations PLUS it is very difficult for them to manage the ongoing relationship with their guest who will almost certainly be offered lots of different offers ALWAYS pushed on price.
This is, of course, bad, too, for the guest – because the amount of money in the transaction is often insufficient to deliver a high level of quality hospitality sustainably.
This is, of course a massive opportunity too.- this year there will be over a billion international tourists and up to 5 billion domestic ones. The accommodation expenditure of these tourists alone is somewhere around $250 billion. It is right to say that at least 50% of accommodation bookings go through third party booking systems OTA/GDS who are charging a minimum of 15% – this represents AT LEAST $19 billion on offer for hotels and B&Bs to claw back through direct marketing.
This is why Globa.li will soon be introducing free software small establishments can use to manage their rates, availability and bookings online, even from smart phones. This technology not only streamlines reservations management, but also allows properties to be bookable online. And yes, it’s free!
