New Orleans unveils new airport terminal

New Orleans has finally opened its long awaited $1.3 billion airport terminal.

It marks a significant upgrade from the ‘old’ terminal at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, says Cindy Perrino, spokesperson at Southwest Airlines.

"It is a modern airline experience here. It’s going to be night and day from the old terminal. It’s light. It’s bright. It’s got all the amenities."

The facility houses music venues, new restaurants and charging stations for electronic devices at half of all the seats.

Live musicians will play every day at the terminal.

"You can come early and enjoy New Orleans right here in our terminal," mayor LaToya Cantrell said during the grand opening to the sounds of traditional New Orleans jazz.

Construction on the new terminal began in early 2016 and was originally due to open in mid-2018.

The terminal consists of three concourses and 35 boarding gates, as well as 8,000 new parking spaces.

City and state officials believe it will lead to more economic development and increased tourism.

"This newer airport, this investment, I think it’s going to be more welcoming for tourists but we can also expand it more readily to accommodate even more travel as we continue to grow," said Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Delta Air Lines also unveiled its new Delta Sky Club lounge at the new terminal.
