New rabies alert as dog bites rise in Bali
Bali’s Health Agency is again warning local residents and visitors to remain on alert for rabies as cases of dog bites continue to rise across the island.
Despite the government’s efforts to eliminate rabies by 2015, this year between January and June, 33,000 dog bite cases have been reported to the health agency, equivalent to 100 to 120 dog bites every day.
"The provincial and regional administrations have implemented various prevention and mitigation programmes to deal with rabies on the island," said I Ketut Suarjaya, head of Bali Health Agency.
"Every dog bite has the possibility of rabies," the doctor explained, reminding people of the presence of many stray dogs on the streets and in villages.
