New start for Industry veteran
New Zealand’s largest privately owned travel agency, House of Travel is looking to an Aussie veteran to assist with its strategic direction.
With more than 44 years in the industry, most recently as the global managing director for Harvey World Travel, Barry Mayo will start with House of Travel from 24 July 2006.
Mayo, who left the travel industry in November 2005 following S8’s purchase of Harvey World Travel, said he was looking forward to working with what he described as the market leader in travel in New Zealand.
“House of Travel is renowned for its business practices and investment in technology. I’ve always admired what they have achieved, particularly in the area of its unique business model which has resulted in strong partnerships between the owner operators of the 90 outlets and House of Travel Holdings.
The average industry turnover in New Zealand is similar to that of an Australian outlet but a House of Travel outlet has at least three times the average turnover, I put that success down to the business model.”
Chris Paulsen, founder and managing director of House of Travel laughed at any suggestion of an Australian takeover.
“The travel industry has been in “change-mode” for sometime now but the pace of that change has certainly stepped up. When the opportunity came up to secure Barry’s experience and knowledge, I knew we’d be crazy not to.”
“I’m thoroughly enjoying bouncing ideas off someone with as many years in the industry as me. We have a mutual respect for each other, although I do think he is a little miffed we beat the Wallabies so convincingly in the first test.”
