New travel lottery has a winner
The new Travel Lottery has announced its first winner – a Holiday Extras customer.
The lottery, run by the Travel Foundation, says at least 50p from each ticket sold goes directly to support projects run in popular holiday destinations around the world.
Salli Felton, chief executive at the Travel Foundation, the charity promoting the Travel Lottery, said: "Drawing our first winner is a milestone for the Travel Lottery and it’s exciting to know that this will be the start of many winners for the years ahead.
"We’re excited by the potential for the lottery. More travel businesses are signing up to sell tickets meaning that over the year ahead the Travel Lottery will start to become much more visible on the high street and online."
Sarah Richards from Herefordshire bought the £2 ticket as she was booking her airport parking for a holiday to Egypt. She won £1,000.
Winning tickets for the Travel Lottery will be selected at the end of every month with prizes of up to £5,000 in each draw.
In 2014, the charity’s projects include helping beach operators in Kenya earn a better living from tourism and provide hassle free tours for holidaymakers to enjoy; helping local businesses thrive alongside all-inclusive hotels in Cyprus and developing the business skills of Mayan women in Mexico so they can supply locally produced honey products to hotels.
