New Zealand hit by violent aftershock
Authorities in Christchurch are assessing damage caused by the latest aftershock to hit the New Zealand city, writes TravelMole Asia Pacific correspondent Ian Jarrett.
Residents reported violent shaking lasting between 15 and 20 seconds during the 5.0 magnitude quake.
Christchurch is recovering from a magnitude 7 earthquake on September 4 that damaged houses, buildings and roads
Today’s aftershock was the strongest of 30 felt in the region over the past week, according to GNS Science.
Flights into Christchurch International Airport were delayed following the quake while engineers checked runway for cracks.
About 250 workers were evacuated from a construction site at the airport.
