NEWS FLASH – Unions fix BA strike date
British Airways workers will reportedly strike for 24 hours over the August Bank Holiday weekend if a dispute over pay is not settled, according to union bosses.
The Sky News website states that workers will strike on either 27, 28, 29 or 30 August after members voted by a majority of 53 per cent to take industrial action. The strike is set to run from 0330 GMT until 0330 GMT the following day, according to the BBC.
Workers had been offered an 8.5 per cent pay increase over three years. According to Sky, the union will make proposals to British Airways in an effort to avoid the strike, but there is “precious little optimism” that the action can be avoided. The situation could even worsen when 8,000 members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) vote over industrial action later this week.
As reported by News From Abroad earlier today, the TGWU worked out that BA could effectively settle the dispute for the sum of GBP10 million a year – presumably rather less that a 24-hour strike could cost the carrier.
National officer Brendan Gold was quoted as saying that profits at BA had soared while pay had not kept pace with inflation: “These figures show what our members know in plain terms – that they have delivered for BA. Profits are up, employee costs are down and will continue to fall as our people accept and adapt to new situations. Their contribution must be recognised.”
