No-Wynn situation: New name urged for Wynn Boston Harbor resort
Massachusetts attorney general has called on state gaming officials to demand the removal of the Wynn name from the upcoming $2.4 billion Wynn Boston Harbor casino.
The resort is scheduled to open next year.
Attorney general Maura Healey believes the Wynn name is now tainted amid the fallout from Steve Wynn’s dramatic fall from grace.
The Wynn Resorts founder is embroiled in numerous allegations of sexual harassment which led to a $7.5 million settlement in one case.
"It’s clear to me, if what’s being alleged is true, that the casino cannot bear Wynn’s name," Healey said in a statement.
"I’m not convinced the company should have a license at all."
State Gov. Charlie Baker said of a proposed renaming: "I certainly think that’s one of the things that should be on the table. Obviously, the allegations from the beginning, all of them, have been horrifying and incredibly disturbing."
The state gaming commission said it is investigating its pre-licensing procedures and whether Wynn Resorts wilfully withheld information regarding the allegations.
The commission says it has received many demands to drop the Wynn name from the resort.
"Currently all options are on the table. We must first complete our investigation and have a full accounting of the facts before we pre-determine outcomes or speculate about next steps," commission spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said.
Meanwhile, a lawsuit has been filed by the New York State Common Retirement Fund which lays blame at the company’s board of directors for failing to act against Steve Wynn.
That is a breach of its fiduciary duties, the suit claims.
The filing detailed Wynn’s ‘chronic sexual harassment of female employees.’
Steve Wynn resigned as chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts last month amid an ‘avalanche of negative publicity.’
