North America’s newest and greenest airport opens
North America’s newest and greenest international airport opens in Winnipeg, Canada on October 30th. The centerpiece of the $585 million airport redevelopment is the new air terminal building of 51,000 square metres. The soaring glass-filled terminal boasts LEED Certified status from the Canadian Green Building Council and natural light sources to reduce electricity consumption, heat recuperation and native prairie grass landscaping.
Designed by master architect Cesar Pelli, the creative vision behind iconic buildings such as Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Aria hotel complex in Las Vegas, a highlight of the Winnipeg international airport passenger experience is the 2nd level departures area featuring 55 skylights, glass sculptures by international artists and Manitoba retailers such as Toad Hall Toys. The new terminal offers efficiencies such as 32 common-use kiosks and bag tagging stations for faster check-ins, user-friendly accessibility for those with disabilities and state-of-the-art transparency for airport security. Winnipeg’s new international airport is a major Canadian landmark.
